In mid-October the Sony Smartwatch 3 hit Google Play, though at the time it was listed simply as “coming soon”. For those interested in picking up the new smartwatch directly from Google’s store, today’s the day. The Smartwatch 3 is priced at $249.99 and is set to ship within 1 to 2 business days.
While the design isn’t nearly as exciting as newer watches like the Motorola 360 and LG G Watch R, the device does stand out from the rest of the crowd due to built-in GPS. Simply put, the SW3 may be a better fit for fitness buffs (runners, bikers, etc) that don’t necessarily want to lug their phones with them each and every time they go out for a run or hop on their bike.

In addition to GPS, the watch has a 1.6-inch 320×320 LCD display, a 1.2GHz quad-core CPU, 512MB RAM, 4GB storage, a host of sensors (ambient light, accelerometer, gyroscope, magnetometer), an IP68 rated design and the latest version of Android Wear (with support for GPS, etc).
What makes the Smartwatch 3 most interesting, aside from its GPS integration and fitness-oriented design, is the fact that this sees Sony move away from its own smartwatch OS in favor of Google’s Android Wear. Considering Sony opted to name it SW3 instead of something like Sony Smartwatch Wear, it’s also pretty obvious Sony has no intentions of maintaining two different smartwatch platforms (unlike Samsung with Tizen and AW).
