that Google may be on
the verge of announcing an
Android-enabled smartwatch;
its second attempt at wearable
technology after "Google Glass".
Following the acquisition of WIMM Labs, an Android-based smartwatch software development platform, in 2012, Google may be on the verge of announcing the launch of its second foray into wearable technology.
According to 9to5Google, Google will be able to bring a large amount of functionality to bear in such a device, incorporating its search and voice recognition software with the help of a Google Now-enabled smartphone. This will include the timely, predictive information that Google is already able to provide users, including calendar alerts, emails, social network updates, text messages and much more.
“Google will announce a Nexus watch, codenamed Gem, likely together with the KitKat announcement,” Artem Russakovskii, Tech Blogger for Android Police, wrote on Google+ earlier this month.
By the same token, only two unconfirmed reports and a vague mention on The Wall Street Journal does not necessarily mean Google will make an announcement anytime soon. Usually we could expect a barrage of rumours published in the weeks leading up to the launch of such a product.
However, the acquisition of WIMM Labs is a clear indicator that Google is developing into this area nevertheless, and partnered with the virtual assistant capabilities of Google Now, the search giant may well soon have a product to rival the recent release of Samsung’s Galaxy Gear smartwatch.
All-in-all, the wearable tech market is certainly beginning to heat up. As these devices become more widely available for both consumers and developers, there will almost certainly be a wide variety of applications for e-commerce.
